Frequently Asked Questions
In an effort to curb unlisted drivers(where households intentionally hide or forget to add drivers) and to verify coverage, the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) operates the Drive Insured system and allows insurance providers to access public motor vehicle records for underwriting.
How the process works:
Database Access: Insurers utilize state-approved databases to periodically cross-check registered addresses against licensed drivers.
The Notification Process: If an insurer discovers a licensed driver linked to your address who is unlisted on your policy, they are legally required by your insurance contract to contact you and clarify.
Auto-Addition: If you ignore the correspondence or fail to respond by the deadline, the insurer has the right to automatically add that driver to your policy and adjust your premium to reflect the updated risk profile.
Resolving Errors: If the unlisted individual has moved away, has their own vehicle and separate insurance, or was a previous resident of your home, you must contact your insurer and provide proof (such as a utility bill, lease agreement, or signed declaration) to have them removed and your rate adjusted.
This is just one more reason why it's important to read your mail.
